SAYAKA KONDO
Profile / English version
Sayaka Kondo
Artist | Illustrator | Director
In November 2017, I was diagnosed with stage 1 blood cancer. I still remember the overwhelming feelings of despair and disbelief as someone who had always been healthy. Amid the fear and anxiety of losing my hair during treatment, one photograph saved me. It gave me the strength to overcome the situation. This experience made me think, “What if my artwork could be that one image for someone else?” This thought became the foundation of my journey as an artist.
For about 17 years, I enjoyed a successful career at a large corporation. However, a department transfer triggered adjustment disorder, leading me to take a leave of absence. During that time, I began drawing again, and my desire to help others, which I had felt during my battle with illness, reignited. In 2022, I made the decision to leave the company and pursue my career as an independent artist. Around the same time, I was declared cancer-free after five years of follow-up, and it truly felt like the beginning of the second chapter of my life.
My artwork is heavily influenced by the city pop art of the 1980s and 90s, characterized by vibrant colors and delicate touches, portraying a bright and sparkling world. However, beneath the surface, my art encapsulates the emotions I’ve experienced throughout my life: joy, anger, sadness, and love. I want to live independently, doing what I love, and be a source of light and hope for others. I believe that in today’s world, showing how to live authentically through one’s passion is the most meaningful thing I can contribute.
Moving forward, I aim to continue delivering messages through my art while also utilizing my years of corporate experience to provide advice and support to help businesses solve their challenges. I am committed to contributing in both art and business spheres.

History
I was born in Osaka Prefecture and grew up freely as the youngest of three siblings. My parents often took me to art museums and music concerts during my childhood, fostering my love for drawing, which I learned on my own. At 16, I spent a year studying abroad in Canada, where I discovered the importance of self-expression. Although I majored in English at university, my desire to study design resurfaced, and I considered dropping out. However, a mentor, with whom I still have a close relationship, advised me, “Become a designer who can also speak English. It’s important to have many skills in your toolkit. If you maintain a desire to learn, you can study at any time.” Inspired by this advice, I decided to stay the course. After graduating from university, I worked part-time to save money and studied the basics of interior design at a vocational school. Afterward, I was fortunate to work on the following projects:
Career
1. Interior Designer
I was responsible for designing model room galleries for condominiums. During this time, I developed a foundation in design and creativity, along with skills in presentations and conveying concepts. The rough sketching and perspective drawing techniques I cultivated during this period are still used in my current artwork.
2. Promotion Director
I directed promotions and the design and construction of commercial facilities. This role helped me learn the basics of promotional activities and project management, which I now use to manage my own creative projects and direction.
3. Showroom Sales Manager for Bedding Products
I managed the entire operation of a bedding showroom, including sales, customer service, promotions, and planning. I learned the importance of communication with customers and gained experience in planning and administrative tasks necessary for showroom management. This experience has proven invaluable in understanding the operational processes that are crucial for my independent work today.
These experiences have laid the foundation for my creativity, direction skills, and operational expertise, which form the culmination of my current work.
